Pastor’s Welcome

Pastor’s Welcome

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit with us online.

The writer of Proverbs has said, “Where there is no vision the people will perish.” The people of Yorktown United Methodist Church (YUMC) are dreaming dreams and striving to secure a vision of what God would have our church be and do in the years ahead.

Without a doubt, our community is a growing, fast-paced, energetic place to live.  We at YUMC are desiring to not only keep pace with the community, but in spiritual family matters we would like to lead the way, helping people continue to grow in their faith and in their service to our Lord.  We firmly believe that our faith should make a difference in the way we live.  Jesus said, “I have come to bring you life, and life more abundantly.”

We invite you to come find the abundant life with us at YUMC. Our Methodist heritage is one that stresses “warm-hearted religion,” fellowship and caring for one another, intellectual pursuits of spiritual questions, mission involvement throughout the community and sacred music to bring us closer to Jesus Christ.

When you visit our church for the first time, we hope that it will not be the last time.  Stay for coffee after worship and give us the pleasure of meeting you.  Perhaps God has in mind for you to become a member of our Lord’s Body in this place.  We hope so.

Established in 1876, we are a friendly church that would like to serve you and help you serve Christ and others.

Come Grow With Us!

Yours In Christ,

– Pastor Gene

About Our Pastor

Rev. Gene Ott was appointed to shepherd the congregation at Yorktown United Methodist Church (YUMC) effective July 2013.  From 2007 until 2009, Pastor Gene served the Island Park United Methodist Church and then in 2009 he was appointed to Stevens Memorial United Methodist Church in South Salem, NY.  In 2012, in addition to his responsibilities at Stevens, Pastor Gene also served the First Church Round Hill in Greenwich, CT.

During his undergraduate studies, having a strong desire to want to help people and listening to God’s call changed Pastor Gene’s course.  In 2005, he was accepted to Drew University’s Theological School. Pastor Gene graduated Magna Cum Laude from seminary, class of 2008.  While in seminary, he did his field work with Rev. Joseph Ewoodzie and the NY Annual Conference Mission team. Pastor Gene had an opportunity to work in Cambodia, Laos, Ghana, Costa Rica, France and Puerto Rico.  These experiences proved to be very valuable, fulfilling and life-changing.

Shortly after graduating seminary, Pastor Gene met his wife Erin.  They married in October of 2010.  They have been blessed with a son, Isaac, who was born in July 2012 and daughter, Amelia, who was born in May 2014. They also have two canine sons, Neko & Damian.  Interestingly, Pastor Gene and Erin attended the same high school and grew up 5 miles from one another.  As he states, “never in my wildest dreams, or hers for that matter, did I think we would wind up married to one another.”

Growing up enjoying the outdoors, Erin loves fishing, camping and spending summers by the pool.  She is an avid reader, and earned her M.A. in Literature from Hofstra University.  She is currently teaching (an adjunct instructor at Westchester Community College) as well as tutoring, but spends most of her time raising their beautiful children.

For relaxation, Pastor Gene likes to read, garden, and work on his 1946 Jeep. He enjoys spending time outside and during the summer months roots for the Detroit Tigers. Having traveled extensively, he prefers to stick close to home with friends, family and his wife and children.
