Christian Education

The Christian Education program at YUMC continues to be one of the key programs that retains and attracts new members to our church. We have a strong Sunday School program offering five class sections that are specifically designed and developmentally appropriate for the Pre-school through High School learner. Additionally, a Children’s Sermon is included weekly in the worship service. The Pastor or Lay Person leads the children and youth through a lively discussion helping students examine important and timely topics. Afterwards, the students are dismissed to their respective classes for Sunday School instruction. Throughout the year, the Sunday School fully participates and sometimes leads mission projects with the support of the congregation. These projects include UM ARMY, Operation Christmas Child, and other community outreach. In addition, we offer two active youth groups: Jr. Youth Group grades 6th-8th and Sr. Youth Group grades 9th-12th. Through learning, mission, fun and fellowship, this youth ministry program helps teens address issues they often face during adolescence. For adults, during the program year, we support two Bible Study classes. Below is a brief description of YUMC’s Christian Education program:

Sunday School

Sunday School is offered for pre-school through High School aged students. The children are encouraged to participate in the service and then are dismissed after the Children’s Message to their respective classes. The children are split up into 5 sections: Pre-K/K, 1st & 2nd, 3rd-5th, 6-8th, 9-12th.

Curriculum

We use a bible-based curriculum that helps children develop a basic level knowledge of the foundational stories that help prepare students to dig deeper into their faith. By reading the Old Testament and New Testament stories, students develop life application skills and an understanding of how God’s word is applicable to their own lives. For the teen student, various topics are covered on a week-by-week basis that specifically deals with many issues that face our youth today. The mission in teaching is for all students to understand that there is always faith, love, and hope and therefore fully realize that they are always important in the eyes of God.

Nursery

We offer a nursery supplied with lots of toys and a quiet space to help make babies and toddlers comfortable. A sound system provides parents the ability to listen to the worship service if they need to assist their children.

Safe Sanctuary Polices

We adhere to Safe Sanctuary policies to ensure the safety of all children. All volunteers working with our youth must complete the application and screening form. Please review the policies at: www.gbod.org/safesanctuaries

Children’s Choir

Students have the opportunity to sing in the YUMC Children’s Choir and perform in the Church throughout the year. Practice is held 15 minutes at the beginning of the Sunday School lesson.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Each Summer YUMC offers Vacation Bible School to the community through a cooperative program sponsored by our church, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church and the Yorktown Presbyterian Church. Over 100 teens and youth participate in this program each year! The two-week long program meets each morning. At the end of the second week, there is a joyous VBS celebration. Children sing and share what they learned during the program.

Bible Literacy Program

Each June YUMC gives developmentally appropriate bibles to students entering kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade, ninth grade, and college. These bibles are awarded to children who regularly participate in the Sunday School Program. Our goal is for children to develop healthy spiritual habits by reading the bible at every stage of development and thus throughout their lives.

Missions

Students participate in missions projects through the year that include Operation Christmas, Christmas Angel, Souper Bowl Sunday, and hand made gifts for the homeless, sick, and elderly residents at nursing homes.

Special Events

Throughout the year YUMC offers many special celebrations for children. These include the “Kick-off” Sunday School Party, Christmas Pageant, Christmas Caroling, Easter Egg Hunt and Celebration, Touch-Down Awards Program, Baptism, Communion and Confirmation Services.
